Botswana’s President to deliver keynote address during Mining Indaba Virtual

The Investing in African Mining Indaba has announced that the President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Masisi will deliver a keynote address at this year’s virtual event.

Masisi is the fourth confirmed presidential speaker for Mining Indaba Virtual, joining Cyril Ramaphosa, Félix Tshisekedi and Julius Maada Bio of South Africa, the DRC and Sierra Leone respectively.

In his keynote speech, Masisi is expected to address Botswana’s development across the mining sector, including progress on production and volumes in diamonds, gold, copper, coal and iron ore, plus new diamond and copper licensing opportunities for explorers and junior miners.

The mining sector continues to be seen as the backbone of Botswana’s economy and one of the largest contributors to GDP, with minerals comprising almost 80% of export earnings.

In 2018, Botswana was the world’s second largest diamond producer by value and volume, but there are significant investment opportunities in expansion and development of the country’s uranium, gold and silver sectors.

The annual Mining Indaba, delivered by Hyve Group Plc, will go entirely virtual this year due to the precarious COVID-19 situation around the world. The highly anticipated online event will take place on February 2-3, 2021.
