Orocobre partners with EnergyX for green lithium extraction technologies

Argentina-focused lithium miner Orocobre and Energy Exploration Technologies (EnergyX) have announced a partnership that will see the companies work together on the implementation of sustainable lithium extraction technologies.

The companies have signed a letter of intent with the goal to make clear the terms under which they will be collaborating and how they will address the challenges associated with the extraction of the battery metal.

ASX-listed Orocobre is keen to improve its extraction processes at the Olaroz operation on the Salar de Olaroz brine resource in the Argentine section of the renowned Latin American lithium triangle.

The facility is operated in joint venture with Toyota Tsusho Corporation and the Jujuy Energía y Minería Sociedad del Estado, and Orocobre is also working in tandem with Advantage Lithium to develop the nearby Cauchari lithium project.

In 2018, Orocobre added 25,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of lithium carbonate production capacity, taking full production and capacity to 42,500 tpa of lithium carbonate for sale to industrial, technical and battery markets.

Meanwhile, EnergyX is currently working on scientific innovations to improve both the extraction and production processes by making them more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
