23 Jun Mines and Money Online Connect (APAC) – Day one round-up
In an attempt to keep up the conversation in the resources sector as the world faces the unprecedented challenge of a global pandemic, the Mines and Money events team has organised a two-part virtual conference series called Mines and Money Online Connect. The three-day APAC series kicked off today, and RGN was there to provide a summary of the highlights from day one.
Online Connect APAC opens with Queensland mines minister welcome
Queensland Government Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Anthony Lynham kicked off the day’s events with a speech encouraging investors to continue being active in Queensland and across Australia.
“Queensland’s resources sector has fared better than many others as economies worldwide struggle,” he said. “Oil and coal prices have taken a massive hit during this pandemic. Despite this, Queensland continues to attract resources investment.”
Evolution chairman underlines quality of Red Lake gold complex in Ontario
In a keynote interview, Evolution Mining executive chairman Ezra Klein told Asia mining correspondent for Thomson Reuters Melanie Burton that the ASX-listed miner is committed to making changes to the cost structure of the recently acquired Red Lake gold complex in Ontario, Canada.
“We’re really excited about the geological potential at Red Lake. Everything we’ve seen since acquiring the asset has only amplified our view about its potential,” Klein said.
Does ESG still matter to investors in a COVID-19 world?
The short answer is yes, according to Nick Rees, head of natural resources at National Australia Bank (NAB). Rees provided a presentation to the Online Connect audience on day one which delved deeper into the prominence of ESG in the resources sector in the ‘new normal’.
“In a crisis everyone remembers how you act. So, it’s important to stakeholders, important for the future of your business and important to attract investors,” Rees stressed.
