BP to develop second phase of giant Khazzan gas field in Oman

BP is set to begin developing the second phase of its giant Khazzan gas field in Oman following the successful start up of the first phase in September 2017.

The final investment decision (FID) for the second phase – named Ghazeer – of the mega-project was reached by BP and its partner Oman Oil Company Exploration & Production on Monday.

“Following the successful startup of Khazzan, we are pleased to announce the sanction of Ghazeer, BP’s first project FID of 2018,” said Yousuf Al Ojaili, president of BP Oman.

“Through the transfer of industry-leading skills and technology from BP’s global portfolio, we look forward to further developing this gas field that is expected to support Oman’s energy needs for many decades to come,” he added.

Khazzan is currently producing at design capacity of around 1 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas per day and around 35,000 barrels per day of condensate. However, Ghazeer is set to boost the project’s capacity by a further 0.5 bcf of gas and over 15,000 barrels of condensate per day.

The second phase is expected to come onstream in 2021.
