Siemens Gamesa to supply turbines to world’s largest offshore wind farm

Danish renewable energy giant Ørsted has selected Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) as its exclusive wind turbine supplier to Hornsea Project Two, the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

SGRE will deliver 300 8MW turbines to the UK-based project from a nearby manufacturing facility in the city of Hull. Hornsea Project Two is located roughly 89km off the UK’s Eastern coast.

“The SGRE factory in Hull has already been producing blades for our Race Bank and Walney Extension projects and will produce the majority of blades for Hornsea Project One,” said Duncan Clark, Ørsted’s programme director the second Hornsea project.

“This selection paves the way for more, and even larger, UK-made blades at a UK offshore wind farm, underlining this country’s world-leading position in the sector,” he added.

Hornsea Project Two will have a capacity of 1.4GW and will generate enough electricity to power more than 1.3 million UK homes when it comes online in 2022.

Over 2,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase, with as many as 130 permanent roles set to be maintained over its operational life.
