GE and GIG partner to deliver largest onshore wind farm in Europe

GE Renewable Energy and Green Investment Group (GIG) are joining forces to deliver a 650MW wind project in Sweden, which they have dubbed the largest single site onshore wind farm in Europe.

The Markbygden ETT wind farm in Northern Sweden is set to begin commissioning by Q2 of next year ahead of entering into operation by Q4 2019, at which point it will increase the Scandinavian nation’s wind generation by more than 12.5%.

GE and GIG, part of Macquarie Group, acquired the project from Swedish renewables developer Svevind and have each invested over US$350 million in equity to finance the project.

GE will supply 179 3.6MW turbines with 137 metre rotors to the project, while the blades are also being equipped with an ice mitigation system provided by blade specialist LM Wind Power.

“Markbygden ETT marks our commitment to the Swedish onshore wind arena and extends our presence in Europe while showcasing our technical capabilities,” said Pete McCabe, president and CEO of GE’s Onshore Wind business.

GIG’s European head Edward Northam added that the project was a landmark transaction and represents the new frontier in Europe’s onshore wind industry.
