08 Jun DONG to install battery storage system for offshore UK wind farm
DONG Energy hopes to install a 2MW battery storage system at its giant offshore Burbo Bank wind farm in the UK by the end of the year.
The Danish energy firm claims the hybrid system will be an industry first, boosting grid stability at the 90MW wind farm, located in Liverpool Bay, off the Northwest coast of the UK.
The battery storage technology will keep the frequency stable at 50Hz, which should reduce the risk of volatile power supply that can damage home appliances and even cause blackouts.
Ole Kjems Sørensen, senior vice president of partnerships and asset management at DONG said: “We’re excited to use battery technology to demonstrate this wind power and battery hybrid capability.
“With eight existing offshore wind farms in the UK and another four under construction, we expect to leverage further technology improvements and innovations and ensure that DONG Energy supports the stability of grid systems as generation capacity becomes cleaner and more sustainable.”
Burbo Bank was unveiled by DONG last month, becoming one of the largest wind farms in the world, with 32 turbines standing at 196 metres tall.
