Centerra Gold to keep Kumtor mine open

After a long dispute with the Kyrgyz Republic over the Kumtor mine in Kyrgyzstan, authorities gave Centerra Gold (TSX:CG) two key permits to keep it running throughout the second half of 2016.

The maximum allowable emissions permit (MAE) is valid until 31 December 2016 and is the first new MAE permit issued by the Kyrgyz Republic State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry (SAEPF) since 2014.

The Kumtor operation also received approval from SAEPF for its 2016 maximum allowable discharge (MAD) permit which allows for discharge of treated effluent.

The approval of environmental expertise of Kumtor’s 2016 mine plan is anticipated to be received before 30 June.

Centerra noted that if it does not receive approval for the mine plan, Kumtor would have to close on 1 July.
